A7X’s M. Shadows On Relaxing On Tour, Pre-Show Routines

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ - JUNE 24: M. Shadows of Avenged Sevenfold performs during the 2012 Orion Music + More Festival at Bader Field on June 24, 2012 in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
When you’re on the road for long stretches of time, you got to find a way to unwind and release the stress built up from the daily grind.

For Avenged Sevenfold’s M. Shadows, he takes a cue from Alice Cooper.

WMMR’s Markus In The Darkus spoke with Shadows recently, and he says his favorite thing to do with his downtime is hit the links for a round of golf:

“I’ve been playing for about five years, but I got really, really into it.  Like pretty much borderline obsession.  I play every off day, and I’m just trying to get better and better…Everyone can’t believe it.  I roll up to the venue and I’ve got my polo shirt on, and then I change into my cut-off sleeves and just get crazy”

Of course, days off are completely different than hours from show time, and Shadows openly admits that there are definitely a series of things he needs to do (and have done to him) before heading out on stage:

“I’m sure there are some, but I have a really strict routine, and I think if I ever veered off that, I would get really tripped out, so I guess that’s a superstition in itself.  But I warm up three hours before a show just to make sure if there’s any problem with my voice, I can have time to fix it.  And then, I always have a sugar-free Red Bull – don’t tell Rockstar that.  (Rockstar sponsors the Mayhem Festival.) And I always wear my Jimmy (late A7X drummer, The Rev) necklace and give it a kiss.  I have our drum tech who’s been with us since day one and one of our best friends he slaps all of our asses, kinda like a baseball player.  We think of it [performing] as a sport; we want to go out there and dominate.  So he does that before we head out there.  We have a lot of little weird things, and as the years go on, it gets more and more.”

So, if you’ve seen or are going to see A7X this summer at the Mayhem Festival, remember that when they hit that first note, all of the guys have just been slapped on the ass.

You’re welcome for that image, ladies…and (some) gentlemen.
