Henry Rollins Talks Hosting History Channel Show, Favorite Historical Figures

NEW YORK, NY - MAY 08: Henry Rollins speaks onstage at the 2014 A+E Networks Upfront on May 8, 2014 in New York City.
Many people claim to be working on multiple projects at once to make it look like they’re in high demand, but usually, it’s all talk.  For Henry Rollins, however, it’s just another day in the life of one of punk rock’s biggest icons.

One of his current projects is hosting “10 Things You Don’t Know About” on History Channel’s H2 network, and when speaking with WDHA’s “Morning Jolt,” Rollins details one of his goals for being involved with this program:

“…My intent with this show, speaking for myself, is to make you curious, to have you enjoy the show, but make you want to learn more, and so perhaps, it’ll make you want to buy a book, or go online and look up something, or follow-up on something we informed you on during the show.”

Rollins, himself, is admittedly a huge fan of history, and when asked what one historical fact or concept he wished Americans he knew, he gave an incredible, insightful answer:

“…I think that everyone should know that our founding fathers and all the people from that time were going into uncharted territory.  They were rebelling against the monarchy, and they said, ‘We’re going to be different.’ ‘Well, what’s that going to be?’ ‘It’s going to be what we make it.’  And you’re living in it now.  Your living in this amazing idea of American democracy and the Constitution, but it was these amazing men and women, who took blank paper and total wilderness and said, ‘Okay, here’s what’s going to happen:  We’re going to call it this.  Let’s go.’ And yeah, we made some mistakes along the way, because we’re human. There’s some things I wish we could not have on our resume, but by and large, I think we got it right…So when someone goes, ‘Oh, America sucks!” Well, you should do your homework.  There’s been some mistakes made, you know, some stuff that’s not that’s not that enviable, but by and large, it’s pretty stunning what we achieved…Can you imagine writing the Declaration of Independence? I can’t!  I know a lot of smart people, but I wouldn’t task them with that either.”

Considering his love of history, “Morning Jolt” host Jim Monaghan asked Rollins if there was a particular historical figure he identified with, and what Rollins responded with was both surprising and appropriate, considering his work within spoken word genre:

“Ah…no, but there are ones I’m huge fans of and aspire to, and that would be Abraham Lincoln.  I admire his calm.  I admire his fairness, but what I admire most is his command of the English language.  His speeches are exquisite.”

Season three of “10 Things You Don’t Know About” is underway on H2, with new episodes airing Saturdays on 10 PM EST.  For more information about the series, head over to History.com.
