After a long period of silence, Soundgarden (and Pearl Jam) drummer Matt Cameron is speaking out — a bit — about frontman Chris Cornell‘s suicide death during May after a concert in Detroit.
Promoting his new solo album Cavedweller, Cameron tells Billboard that, “I don’t think we’re ready to say anything other than…Kim (Thayil) and Ben (Shepherd) and I are certainly aware of how much our fans are hurting, and we’re certainly hurting right there along with them. But we’re extremely private people, and we’re all still processing our grief in our own way and on our own time. But we definitely are thinking of our fans and love them very much.”
Cavedweller came out September 22, and Cameron has just released a lyric video for the opening track “Time Can’t Wait.” Cameron plays guitar, bass and keyboards (as well as drums) and sings on the album, with contributions from guests such as Alain Johannes (Eleven, Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures) on two tracks, as well as Tim Lefebvre (Tedeschi Trucks Band) on bass and David Bowie’s “Blackstar” drummer Mark Giuliana.
Cameron can also be seen and heard today (September 29) in “Let’s Play Two,” a concert film from Pearl Jam’s pair of 2016 shows at Chicago’s Wrigley Field.
