There were rumblings a couple of weeks ago about how Dave Grohl recorded an epic 23-minute song, and now we have a better idea of how that track came to be.

Grohl announced a new two-part documentary called Play, which is slated for release on August 10.  The whole documentary was inspired by the music lessons his own children take.

“When I take my kids to the place where they take their lessons, I see these rooms full of children that are really pushing themselves to figure this out,” said Grohl in a statement.  “And even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out… it’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”

Per Rolling Stone, the first part of the documentary will focus on the behind-the-scenes action of prepping for Grohl’s 23-minute musical marathon song, while the second part is the performance of the song itself.

Play is currently available for pre-order.
