David Gilmour offered up 120 guitars from his personal collection at an auction at Christie’s in New York today (June 20), and his iconic 1969 Black Fender Stratocaster, affectionately known as “The Black Strat,” went for an astounding $3.975 million.
Gilmour played the guitar on The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall. Christie’s estimated “The Black Strat” to sell between $100,000-150,000.
Christie’s reported that the sale of all 120 guitars at today’s auction produced a grand total of $21,490,750. Gilmour is donating all of the proceeds from the auction to the ClientEarth, a climate change organization.
