UMG Fire: New List Reveals Hundreds of Artists Whose Masters Were Lost
The New York Times has unveiled a list of hundreds of artists whose master recordings were destroyed in a 2008 Universal Music Group vault fire.
When the New York Times Magazine initially published their feature “The Day The Music Burned” two weeks ago, a smaller, but still stunning, list of over one hundred artists were named that were affected by the fire.
This new, more comprehensive list comes from multiple documents as part of “Project Phoenix,” which was an effort by UMG to obtain replacement or duplicate copies of master recordings that were lost in the fire. This new list adds over seven-hundred new artists to the ones previously reported.
NYR notes for the new artists unveiled that “…it is not possible to assert definitively which masters were burned in the fire, nor can it be said categorically that all of these artists did in fact lose masters. It also cannot be determined exactly how many of the destroyed masters were primary-source originals.”
Below is just the list of notable rock, alt. rock, classic rock and other influential artists included on “Project Phoenix.”
