MONTE VISTA, CO – MARCH 08: Sandhill Cranes fly in at sunset to roost for the night in the wetlands of the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge on March 8, 2008 in Monte Vista, Colorado. Migrating along the same route they’ve followed for thousand’s of years, greater sandhill cranes arrive in the San Luis Valley in late winter every year. More than 25,000 cranes stop here to rest and feed as they travel from their wintering grounds of Mexico, Arizona and New Mexico to their summer homes in the northern Rocky Mountains. In the video, the woman taping can be heard saying that the birds had been doing this for over an hour. According to TMZ, there were over 300 birds found in front of the building, 97 of them were dead and nine were euthanized afterward. 102 were expected to survive the incident.
As for why the birds were flying into the building, a Carolina Waterfowl Rescue representative explains that "These birds don't normally travel at night, so we believe that their roosting area where they sleep was disturbed."
