TC’s 5 Fave “Love” Movies of The 90’s (With a bit of EDGE)
Happy Valentines Day Friends!
I’m not really that “romantic” by nature, BUT I love a good, edgy mushy movie.
While my Top 5 of the 90’s may be a bit “non-traditional”, I explain my “Love for the Love” …(in a few cases more lust) with these top 5 TC faves…..The 90’s ….music and mush! And so many great characters…….Let’s Go!
REALITY BITES- 1994- This 1994 Ben Stiller classic captures the vibe, clothes, and attitudes of the 90’s and friends finding their way through life and love after college. The soundtrack is awesome with U2, World Party, Dinosaur Jr. Squeeze and many more. And the chemistry between Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke is pretty smoking. And the My Sharona scene is classic…..
BOOGIE NIGHTS- 1997- Okay..I know what you are thinking…but hear me out! 1997 gave us the dysfunctional BN’s family led by patriarch and brilliantly acted character Jack Horner – (Burt Reynolds) and yes, while there was a high octane pump of lust, the love that this crazy, thrown together family felt for each other, (take the activities out) make it for me a different kind of love story. Plus the 70’s soundtrack with “You Sexy Thing”, “Fooled Around and Fell In Love” and the 80’s Sister Christian and Jessie’s Girl scenes ” Make it one of my favorite movies of all time. . Seems everyone was in love and lust in this film like no other.
CRUEL INTENTIONS- 1999- Gave us this odd but lustful remake. Based in New York City it shows a real crumb of a dude “Sebastian” played by Ryan Phillipe falling in love with the girl he was trying to trick “Annette” played by Reese Witherspoon. And of course a great villain “Kathryn” portrayed by Sarah Michelle Geller. It’s dark, comedic at times and pretty darn romantic watching the bad guy fall in love with the nice girl only to meet a horrible fate. Great chemistry and over the “top-ness” in this one. And a KILLER 90’s Alternative soundtrack too with The Verve, Dinosaur Junior and Counting Crowes. A guilty pleasure for sure…
SINGLES- 1992 – Brilliance from Cameron Crowe the cast is superb, the music is mesmerizing including performances from Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, cameos from Eddie and Stone and a soundtrack that is legendary. Single 20 somethings, living in a Seattle apartment complex, falling in and out of love, finding love and loving music. This movie is perfect! And a genius time stamp of the 1990’s. I can watch it every time it’s on.
HEAVY- 1995
This film is a cult classic and not quite as edgy and certainly not as well known as my other choices but so REAL and honest. A true look at unrequited love. A really beautiful movie featuring a young Liv Tyler as the love interest and Debbie Harry as a cynical waitress. The shining star is Pruitt Taylor Vince as Victor, the awkward, sweet guy in love with Liv’s character. . It also has a cool 90’s soundtrack featuring Evan Dando of the Lemonheads who is also in the movie , Thurston Moore and The Plimsouls. You will feel HEAVY in your heart- It’s so perfect.
Here’s to LOVE (and Lust!)
Happy Valentines Day Friends!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE you all! XXXXXOOOOOO
