Valentine’s Day: Is It A Real Holiday?
It’s Valentine’s Day today. But what does that mean? Sure, you may have dinner plans or are picking up some flowers on your way home from work. But when it comes down to it……is today even a “real” holiday?
According to a YouGov poll, 57% of respondents say Valentine’s Day DOES NOT qualify as a “real special occasion” and is celebrated more because of “pressure from commercial entities.” Somewhat surprisingly, women (58%) were more likely than men (56%) to say Valentine’s Day wasn’t a real holiday.
We all see the ads on tv for the perfect gift for that special someone and we feel compelled to get something nice for our partners, but is it really necessary? You hear some people say, “we should be showing the ones we care about that we love them all year long”, but others would say it’s a nice occasion to show that special someone what they mean to you.
In another recent survey, we find that 48% of women and 23% of men say they have felt disappointed by a partner not doing enough on Valentine’s Day.
I’ve never been one to go overboard and my wife agrees with how she handles the day. We don’t shop over our budget or go too crazy in any way. But, that’s just us. I guess what it comes down to is that it’s different for every couple. If you both agree that you want to celebrate and go all out…..then do it! But if you’re content just sitting on the couch watching the same Netflix show you watch every night, then there’s nothing wrong with that!
