Americans Eat Almost 2 Billion Pounds Of Potato Chips Each Year
There are so many snacks out there to enjoy. From sweet to savory, we have an abundant list of treats to choose from. But, today we celebrate the one that is America’s favorite snack to enjoy – Potato Chips.
It’s National Potato Chip Day (Tuesday, March 14th)! And Americans eat roughly 1.85 billion pounds of these things each year. Let’s take a look at some cool facts you might not know about your favorite snack!
- Do you know how many of complain that the bag of chips isn’t always full and there’s a lot of “air” just filling up the contests inside? Well, it’s actually not air. It’s nitrogen gas, which prevents the chips from oxidizing.
- In Britain, our favorite snack is referred to as “crisps”
- Our neighbors in Pennsylvania are the leading producers of potato chips in the entire world.
- The first snack food to be advertised on television? You guessed it – potato chips. Lay’s Brand to be exact!
- If you’re a fan of Pringles and that long barrel you can get your hand caught in, keep in mind they are not actually chips. That’s right! Pringles are made from a dough formed from dried potatoes.
And check this out – Some brands will put out limited-edition flavors, which is always exciting. But in China, they have a massive selection of flavors you could try. The company Lay’s makes a totally different line of chips that sound really interesting.
Some highlights include:
- Roasted garlic oyster flavor
- Pickled fish flavor
- Fried crab flavor
- Mexican chicken tomato flavor
- Italian red meat flavor
- Yam crisps – tomato flavor
- Yam crisps – cucumber flavor
So go ahead and celebrate this special day by cracking open a bag of your favorite flavor! I’ve always dug Old Bay Seasoned or sour cream and onion!
