Tonight’s 80’s at 8 started with a track from Shooting Star. Shooting Star was a rock band that formed in the late 1970s in Kansas City, Missouri. Their music was characterized by powerful vocals, intricate guitar riffs, and memorable hooks. One of their most popular songs was “Tonight,” which was released in 1980. Lead singer Gary West delivers a powerful vocal performance, singing about the desire to live life to the fullest and seize the moment. It’s a high-energy rock anthem that captures the excitement and passion of youth. It opens with a catchy guitar riff , a Violin, and driving drumbeat that immediately grabs your attention. The guitar solo by Van McLain is rocks, it showcases his exceptional technical skill. Shooting Star was the second single released from their self titled debut album. Shooting Star was the first act signed to Virgin records. The album was produced by Gus Dudgeon better known for his work with Sir Elton John. It is a great album that features other great singles that were released like, “You Got What I Need”, “Bring It On”, and Last Chance. A music critic for All Music called Last Chance ,” one of the finest songs ever. Overall, “Tonight” is a classic rock song that has stood the test of time. Its message of living life to the fullest and embracing the moment is as relevant today as it was when it was first released over 40 years ago. The second track in tonight’s 80’s as 8 comes from April Wines 1985 album Walking Through Fire . Titled Rock Myself to Sleep. It was also featured in the 1985 horror movie Fright Night that was written and directed by Tom Holland. Rock Myself to Sleep is also on their 1992 compilation Over 60 Minutes with April Wine : The Hits and Their 1994 four CD Set The April Wine Collection. “Rock Myself to Sleep” was not a commercial success, failing to chart but , it remains a fan favorite, and is often played at April Wine concerts and events. The album was recorded to a contract obligation with the bands record label.by the time the album was recorded the band had technically had broken up. The album only features to original April wine band members, Myles Goodwin and Brian Greenway. Remember when songs in the 80’s that were from movie soundtracks were a hit and they made music videos for the song and the video had the band performing the song and the movie clips tied in with it?
