I’ve been drumming for many years. As a kid in High School, I had the opportunity to join the marching band and I never regretted doing that. I learned so much and gained so many skills that I could apply to my drumming in my bands at the time.
I also have to admit, we played some cool music. I’ll never forget doing hits from The Who one year. I’ve always been a fan of their classic and that was a lot of fun to see them come together on a football field.
However, I am a little jealous of marching bands now that have the opportunity to play some Metallica and win some prizes for their school! If you haven’t heard about this contest, you can register and/or get more details here.
But basically, Metallica is holding a contest to see some marching bands from around the country do versions of songs from their catalog. It’s the Metallica Marching Band Competition and it’s open right now!
Bands can grab sheet music at the website for 13 songs including Fade To Black, One, The Unforgiven, and more.
Over $150,000 worth of prizes is up for grabs, with schools getting musical instruments and equipment for their school programs. There are separate prizes for Division 1 college bands, Division 2 and 3 college bands, and high school bands. Bands need to enter by November 16th.
If you’re part of the music program at a school, know of a student in the marching band, or maybe are a band member yourself, I would definitely talk to someone about getting involved!
It sounds like it could be a lot of fun, plus there are some great prizes to win. And who doesn’t love free stuff? Let’s get an NJ High School or College as the winner of this thing…….and maybe add some Metallica to your repertoire at football halftime shows.
