NJ Lake Shut Down By Something That Florida Man Deals With Every Day
FLORIDA MAN STRIKES AGAIN! – Actually taking a little bit of a break as Florida Man deals with what’s going on with Idalia.
But we do have this to tell you about. A New Jersey park has been closed to the public because of something Florida Man sees pretty much every day – an alligator.
You can see video and photos of the gator here.
AUDIO COURTESY OF CBS NEWS – “A park in New Jersey is closed this morning. And a search is underway for an alligator spotted in a creek at least half a dozen times. Just something you don’t hear about a lot in New Jersey, especially.
CBS’s Elijah Westbrook is live at that park in Middlesex County with the very latest. Elijah, has anybody seen this gator?
Well, you know, Chris and Cindy, I was just about to say, moments before this live shot, I thought I saw some movement in the water. I don’t want to raise any red flags, but I thought I saw some ruffles in the water there behind me. Good morning to the both of you. Such an unusual discovery for this part of New Jersey.
You can see right here behind me that town officials have blocked off this bridge that goes over to the other side of this pond here, of course, for safety reasons. And that yellow tape actually extends all along this barrier here.
This is actually one of the last few places where residents of this part of Middlesex, New Jersey, say they spotted this three to four foot alligator. Go ahead and take a look. We just got this video from someone by the name of Dylan Bauman. Thank you, Dylan, for letting us use it.
A little hard to see, but that’s the alligator that’s causing all this havoc, if you will. It looks like a few inches underwater. We’ll try to gather more pictures throughout the morning. Now we also have video of Middlesex police and wildlife authorities using drones to search for the alligator.
We know a similar effort will be conducted in the hours ahead. Now, we’ve learned that over the weekend, a police officer made an attempt to fire at the reptile to try and neutralize it. They say the alligator immediately submerged back into the water and it’s unclear if the attempt was successful.
So until that portion is confirmed at this hour, residents are being warned to stay on the lookout.
They got to stay away from the water. Do not approach this animal. The suspicion is that someone had it as a pet and just released it, which is very common. When these alligators get bigger, they’re unmanageable. I’m sure they’re going to get this thing. I hope they are. But it is a concern, I mean, an alligator roaming loose in your neighborhood and at the end there was a resident who spotted the alligator, along with a few others, of course, concerned about their safety.
Now New Jersey Dep Fish and Wildlife are working to set up a humane trap to capture the gator. The mayor says the lake and its surrounding areas are expected to be closed for at least the next two days. He says authorities will continue their search for the reptile this morning and back out here live.
They’re urging anyone who spots this alligator to give police a call. Chris and Cindy, we are continuing to keep our eyes peeled for this very unusual discovery.
That’s the very latest here in Middlesex, New Jersey. I’malijah Westbrook, CBS 2 News.”
And by the way, the phone number for the police department should you see this little gator 732-356-1900.
