Trevor Bauer To Pitch Against the Yankees On Sunday
Last week on the WDHA Two-Minute Drill Chris Swendeman and I brought up the idea of the New York Yankees taking a flyer on Trevor Bauer.
Well look who the Yankees will now be facing in a Spring Training exhibition game this Sunday!
With their number one pitcher, Gerrit Cole, on the shelf until at least sometime in May, the Yankees have a rather large hole to fill at the top of their rotation.
Cole put up some very gaudy numbers in 2023, going 15-3 with an American League-leading 2.63 earned run average.
He also led the league in shutouts (2) and much more important, innings pitched (209).
Needless to say, there is no one currently out there who can replace what Cole brought to the rotation last year.
That’s not to say the Yankees don’t have an option or two left.
New York Yankees options for 2024
JOHNNY CUETO
A two-time All-Star, Cueto just turned 38 and had Tommy John surgery a few years ago.
He’s not a long-term option should Cole’s stint on the injured list last longer than hoped.
JORDAN MONTGOMERY
The Yankees are said to have reopened discussions with Montgomery about a return to pinstripes.
While he has started 32 games in each of the last two seasons, he hasn’t thrown as many as 190 innings in a season in the course of his career, and he has also had Tommy John surgery.
Which brings us back to this guy.
TREVOR BAUER
The National League Cy Young Award winner in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, Bauer is slated to appear in five games for the Diablos Rojas, including one against a Yankees split squad this Sunday.
Bauer hasn’t appeared in a Major League Baseball game since 2021 after he was hit with sexual assault charges and subsequently suspended for 324 games.
His suspension by Major League Baseball was ultimately reduced to 194 games but as a yet, no MLB team has offered Bauer a shot at returning.
If Bauer should happen to pitch well against the Yankees on Sunday, the temptation to sign him may indeed ramp up.
One of the questions that will be asked is will the reward outweigh the risks involved?
