Solar Eclipse Safety Tips For Your Pet
Hey Animal Lovers,
You have probably heard, Monday April 8th, 2024 a TOTAL Solar Eclipse will cross North America, passing over the United States, Mexico, and Canada did you know that we need to enforce Solar Eclipse Safety Tips For Your Pet in addition to yourself?
Well, we do! Between the hours of 2p and 4p this Monday, our pets will need our help. While pets don’t “traditionally” look starlight into the sun (they are a bit too small for that I’m told) An eclipse can be deceiving, and there is no need to take chances.
WHAT IS A SOLAR ECLIPSE?
A solar eclipse happens when the moon “eclipses” the sun. This means that the moon, as it orbits the Earth, comes in between the sun and the Earth, thereby blocking the sun and preventing any sunlight from reaching us. Looking directly to the sky at the sun can lead to permanent eye damage, so special eye protection must be used when viewing a solar eclipse.
Until I saw a reminder from our friends at one of our WDHA Rock N’ Ruff partners- “Rosemarie’s Rescue Ranch”- I never even thought of the impact this event could have on our pets! I mean come on- we think they understand everything we say, but come on- “Don’t look up….you’ll hurt your eyes”! May not resonate!
Let’s keep in mind, we know our pups need to go out to do their “biz”, but keeping them inside is the BEST thing to do.
Solar Eclipse Saftey Tips For Your Pet
Keep Pets Inside– Walks during this time frame are NOT a good idea. Our pets traditionally don’t look directly at the sky according to the AKCm but don’t take chances. They don’t know where to look or not to look.
Close Curtains– If your pet likes to look out the window – Monday’s window (in the window) should be prohibited.
Always Try And See Your Pets Safe From Stress- When we feel it, they will feel it.
Of Course, you can find more tips from the American Kennel Club here.
Stay Safe and enjoy this historical event- And as always- Opt To Adopt!
