At Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, all 8 “Jersey” related movies from Kevin Smith were shown in a marathon.  Let’s do a Kevin Smith Vulgarthon Review.  I wanted to let you know about my experience and talk about what it was like this past Saturday.

I grew up being a big fan of Kevin Smith from Clerks all the way to Clerks III and everything in between.  So, when Vulgarthon 2024 was announced, my best friend and I were like “We NEEED to go!”

What Is The Kevin Smith Vulgarthon?

What exactly was this day?  It was a chance to relive all the awesomeness of the View Askewniverse.

These movies are Jersey-related, which makes it pretty cool. They tie back to characters from previous films and of course are very funny and vulgar with great conversations – Kevin Smith has a knack for writing good conversational scenes.

Now, this was a long day.  It started at 9 am with Clerks being shown (they went in order).  The last film, Clerks III began at midnight.  If you made it through all 8 films you got a special coin to commemorate the event.

Plus, with your ticket purchase, you received a Kevin Smith signed poster of Vulgarthon.  They had concessions because of course Smodcastle Cinemas is a real working movie theater.

There were also several spots on the same block to grab food for lunch or dinner.  Plus, behind the theatre was a food truck parked for most of the day.

I have to say that while I love the humor in most of his films, after rewatching these movies, his two strongest features out of this universe are Chasing Amy and Dogma.  They are both so well written, have some really cool shots, and are just plain different. Especially in terms of what we usually get from Hollywood.

What a fun day my friend and I had.  If Kevin decides to do more of these I highly recommend you try and attend.  Veen if you don’t make it through every movie.  It’s still really fun.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, in between each movie Kevin Smith came into the theater to do a Q&A where you could ask him literally anything!  He was candid, funny, and an open book like always.

Below is a picture of the coin we each received.

5 Of The Best Movie Rock Soundtracks

We in Jersey love to give our opinion on things.  I recently found 5 Movie Soundtrack Songs That Rock.  And the way I did that is by asking DHA listeners.  The biggest and smartest music fans there are baby!!!

At 5 pm weekdays, I do First Call Last Call, which is a set of music that I themed.  Where do I get that theme from?  Well,  About an hour before that, I post a question of the day and base the tunes I play on listener responses. Our listeners always have tremendous responses.  So many bands and songs that weren’t top of mind for me or that I completely forgot about.  It’s so much fun reading through the listener responses!

Yesterday, I was in the mood to play some tunes from movie soundtracks, so I posed the question – Name A great rock song from a movie soundtrack.  I also mentioned that I’d love for the responses to include the song AND the movie.  And boy did I get some awesome answers.

When you think about it, there are so many amazing films that have scenes with songs that just make the moment extra special.  Of course, there are some soundtracks where you get tunes that might not have been highlighted in the movie but still kick ass.  Either way, music really adds another layer to film and it’s cool to say how the musical director chooses to structure the scene.

I feel like lately, there haven’t been as many soundtracks coming out that contain original music by bands that you want to get a copy of.  At least not like back in the day (think Singles soundtrack or Heavy Metal).

Nevertheless, music will always be a big focus in many movies and to celebrate that let’s take a look at 5 Movie Soundtrack songs that rock!

HERO - CHAD KROEGER

Maybe it's because I love this movie so much (Spider Man), but this song just hits the right spot. Fitting for a movie about a boy who becomes a hero to the big city. Awesome and catchy tune!

WHO MADE WHO - AC/DC

There's some cool, fun rockin 80's tunes from AC/DC.  Sure they had some down moments as well, but this rocker is fun and upbeat and works well in this Steven King movie adaptation - Maximum Overdrive.

BLAZE OF GLORY - JON BON JOVI

What an amazing western-themed tune from the New Jersey native.  It's got such a big chorus and you can't help but sing along.  Love it!!  From Young Guns II

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE - GUNS N ROSES

What can I say?  The opener to the outstanding GNR debut.  It is such a rockin one that sets the tone for the whole album. On the soundtrack to the Clint Eastwood film - The Dead Pool.

LAYLA - DEREK AND THE DOMINOS

This song is utterly classic.  The guitar is instantly recognizable.  The end, with the piano, is simply iconic.  It's such a great one and features so well in Goodfellas.
