I am all about music in general. All genres, all periods. I'm just wondering - Where Are The Super Bowl rock acts? I haven't seen a rocker on that big stage in a while!
So it was announced over the weekend that hip-hop artist Kendrick Lamar would be the Halftime performer for this season’s Super Bowl. Let me start by saying this: With my limited knowledge of the rap genre, I think Kendrick has chops and sounds great in his music. So I have nothing against him whatsoever.
My question is where is a solid rocker or band being named this year’s performer? It’s been hip-hop, R&B, Pop, for some time now. I get that the act has to have a mass appeal, but I would argue that there are some bands out there who have more cross-genre appeal than Kendrick. And again, I think he’s a really top-notch, next-level rapper. I’m just ready for another year like when Tom Petty performed, or something along those lines.
For years, I never understood why Foo Fighters weren’t asked to play. I think they have so many fans and so many hits that it just makes perfect sense for them to take the biggest stage. Although now, with the passing of Taylor Hawkins, and them not being at the very height of their career, it may be too late for them.
I know I’m throwing a lot of questions out there, but I’m thinking, probably just like you, aren’t there still rock acts that could put on a killer halftime show? I think so. Foos, The Stones, Metallica, Creed, and Pearl Jam, could all get the job done and do it well.
I’m thinking that next year might be a good time to switch things up. After several more hip-hop or R&B-leaning artists, maybe rock could be center stage again. Just for one night. I think viewers would be interested and it would be something different.
And if it doesn’t happen…..I can dream can’t I?
New Jersey Picks Their Top 5 Foo Fighters Songs That Rock
It’s hard to believe that Foo Fighters have been around since the mid-90s, but they are veterans and I thought we could take a look at 5 Foo Fighters Songs That Rock according to Jersey!
It really is astonishing that Dave Grohl was the drummer in the wildly popular Nirvana and then after Cobain’s death, he went on to write his own material and start a new band that has enormous success. That’s an achievement that very few could pull off. But Dave Grohl is not like most humans. LOL
To find the top Foo tracks, I used a feature that is part of my show. First Call Last Call. It’s a themed set of music that I play at 5 pm, just in time for the ride home. The theme is based on the question of the day which I post at 4 pm on the DHA Facebook page. Listeners have an hour to get there, comment, and speak their minds. I always get cool responses and it’s interesting to see what songs or bands are chosen.
The hardest part is then picking through those comments to piece together the block of music for the ride home. Some days are easier than others. With Foo Fighters, obviously, they have so many hits that you know before asking the question that the list will be all over the map. But we’ll get some great answers nonetheless.
Whether it’s hard rocking, up-tempo tracks, or more mild, mellow, emotional tunes, Foo has you covered. They always bring that wall of guitars sound and big epic drums and of course Dave with his scream like singing. It’s always extraordinary to hear and it’s been cool to watch them develop throughout their career!
