Thanksgiving travel is expected to soar to record levels this year, and Amtrak is urging passengers to book tickets early as trains fill up faster than ever.

According to a recent statement from Amtrak, the company anticipates one of its busiest holiday travel periods in recent history, with ridership expected to surpass pre-pandemic levels. Routes in the Northeast Corridor — including stops in Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C. — are seeing the highest demand.

“Amtrak offers a comfortable, convenient alternative to congested highways and crowded airports all year round – especially during the busy holiday season,” said Amtrak Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer Eliot Hamlisch. “Whether you’re a longtime guest or joining us for the first time, we invite you to experience the ease and hospitality of Amtrak as you travel to your holiday gatherings.”

Transportation analysts agree the surge reflects a broader national trend. The American Automobile Association (AAA) projects over 55 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this Thanksgiving, marking a 2.5% increase from 2024. Rising gas prices and the convenience of city-center train stations have made Amtrak an appealing alternative for Northeast residents.

Amtrak has added extra trains on popular routes and encourages passengers to check schedules and arrive early for boarding. In addition, flexible fare options remain available for those uncertain about their return dates.
