Morristown Medical Center grabbed the number one position among New Jersey hospitals in Newsweek's America's Best-in-State Hospitals 2026 rankings. Newsweek evaluated 11 facilities statewide, measuring quality, patient experience, and reputation among medical professionals.

Hackensack University Medical Center came in second. Englewood Hospital and Medical Center took third, while Overlook Medical Center in Summit and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick completed the top five.

Cooper University Hospital in Camden landed at sixth. It's the only South Jersey facility that made the list. Newsweek reviewed more than 6,000 hospitals nationwide, using global data to assess medical outcomes and care standards.

Saint Peter's University Hospital, Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center, The Valley Hospital, and Holy Name Medical Center filled out the state's top 11. Holy Name Medical Center is the sole newcomer — all others appeared on the 2025 list too.

Cooper University Hospital is South Jersey's only Level I trauma center. It belongs to Cooper University Health Care, which runs three hospitals total: Cooper University Hospital Cape Regional, the busiest general trauma center in the Greater Philadelphia area, and Children's Regional Hospital at Cooper, the Delaware Valley's only Level II pediatric trauma center.

The health system has nearly 14,000 team members. It gets more than 2.4 million patient visits every year. Patients come from all 50 states and 35 countries seeking treatment at these facilities.

The health care system is developing a $3 billion expansion project with state help. Plans call for three new patient towers with 745 private rooms, new surgical suites, and a regional command center for emergencies.

According to its website, the system operates as the leading academic health provider in South Jersey. The expansion will increase capacity and modernize facilities across the network.
