Target will open two stores in New Jersey on March 15. The openings will create about 370 jobs combined. This expansion pushes the retailer's presence in the state to 55 locations. The Minnesota-based chain plans to launch sites at Journal Square in Jersey City and West Orange Plaza in West Orange.

Jersey City gets a 40,000-square-foot small-format store on the ground level of Kushner Cos.'s mixed-use development The Journal. West Orange will receive a 150,000-square-foot store in a space where a Kmart once stood.

These openings are part of a push to unveil 300 new stores by 2035. The company is on track to open more than 30 locations this year.

Target operates about 2,000 sites across the U.S. The newest store in the state opened last summer at Flemington Marketplace in Flemington.

The small-format Jersey City store is designed to serve commuters. It sits near public transportation with early opening hours and easy fulfillment services. Shoppers will find a CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks, and drive-up and pick-up services inside.

Target Circle 360 members will have same-day delivery options. All Jersey City residents can use next-day delivery, the chain said.

The smaller concept uses a "flexible design" that allows the company to "bring the best of the Bullseye into urban neighborhoods, near colleges, and other areas where a full-size Target wouldn't fit," according to the retailer. About 90 employees will staff the store, which will operate seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The West Orange location follows a multimillion-dollar upgrade of West Orange Plaza. Shoppers will find a CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks, and Target Optical on-site.

Services include drive-up, order pickup, and same-day delivery with Target Circle 360. Next-day delivery is available to all of West Orange. The location will hire about 280 workers and operate daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Other tenants at the plaza include Whole Foods Market, Verizon, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Jersey Mike's Subs, Dogtopia, America's Best Contacts & Eyeglasses, and Club Pilates.

Per NJ BIZ, Chief Stores Officer Adrienne Costanzo said the new stores give teams "the tools and environments to bring our merchandising strengths to life, create easier and more inspiring shopping experiences, and use technology to move smarter and faster every day."

Local stores handle 95% of orders placed online. This includes same-day delivery service with Target Circle 360, according to the company.
