Formed in Oakland, California in 1991 by vocalist and guitarist Robb Flynn, Machine Head is considered a pioneer of the most recent wave of American heavy metal. The band first started to gain traction in Europe more than in the US during the first four album cycles, but with the release of 2003’s Through the Ashes of Empires, they began to get a real push in the US, as the album reached 88 on the Billboard 200 chart.
Machine Head is known for their blend of thrash, groove, and nu metal, having fluctuated between these styles throughout their career. Their sixth album, The Blackening (2007) featured a mostly thrash style and brought the band significant recognition from the metal community and beyond. The album was chosen as the Album of the Decade by Metal Hammer, and its first single “Aesthetics of Hate” earned a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance.
The band’s success continued following The Blackening, with Unto the Locust (2011) and Bloodstone & Diamonds (2014) both keeping with the more thrash-centered direction, with the latter being their highest-ranking album on the Billboard 200 chart, reaching number 21. More recently, the band some more nu metal influences for 2018’s Catharsis before going back to a groove and thrash influence for their newest album Of Kingdom and Crown in 2022.
In Flames is a heavy metal band, formed in Sweden in 1990. The band is known for being an influence in rock music, specifically by establishing the genre of Swedish death metal. In Sweden, the band has won four Grammis awards including Best Hard Rock/Metal Album and the Swedish Export Award. In Flames has also had lots of international success, helping to put Sweden on the map for the country’s rock music. Most recently, the band released their fourteenth album, Foregone, including singles “State of Slow Decay,” “The Great Deceiver,” “Foregone, Pt. 1,” “Foregone, Pt. 2,” and “Meet Your Maker.”
