When one door closes, another one opens…. That’s the case for Megadeth’s founding member and lead vocalist/guitarist Dave Mustaine. After being let go from Metallica in the early 1980s, Dave formed Megadeth and began a triumphant career as one of “The Big 4” of thrash metal. Through numerous line-up changes over the last few decades, Megadeth consistently released metal classics with many songs being staples of the genre.

Their debut album “Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good!” was released in 1985 and became a benchmark for the thrash metal scene. It caught the attention of Capitol Records, who signed Megadeth and put out the band’s sophomore album “Peace Sells… but Who’s Buying”.  This record exceeded the results “Killing Is My Business… And Business Is Good!” gained. Songs like “Wake Up Dead”, “The Conjuring”, and “Peace Sells” are iconic and easily recognizable. Many people may remember the bass guitar introduction on Peace Sells as the theme for MTV News – an impressive acknowledgement for a thrash metal band.

One of the most influential metal albums of all time is Megadeth’s 1990 landmark album, “Rust in Peace”. This absolute masterpiece is filled with hits like “Holy Wars… The Punishment Due”, “Hangar 18”, “Poison was the Cure”, and “Tornado of Souls”. The twin lead guitar sound of Dave Mustaine and Marty Friedman is highly praised while the songs have helped inspire countless guitarists and continue to do so. Many would regard “Rust in Peace” as a perfect album.

They followed this with 1992’s “Countdown To Extinction”, another highly praised record in Megadeth’s discography. Songs like “Skin o’ My Teeth”, “Symphony of Destruction”, and “Sweating Bullets” helped propel this album to mass appeal. A unique result of this album is the naming of a cocktail created by Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell Abbott. He mixed a splash of Crown Royal with a splash of Coca Cola and called it a Blacktooth Grin. The name came from a line in the song “Sweating Bullets” when Dave sings “And smile with Blacktooth grin”.

In total, Megadeth has released 16 studio albums. Their latest was 2022’s “The Sick, the Dying…. and the Dead!” The punching rhythm section mixed with blistering leads and incredible song writing are monumental and will continue to inspire and shape people into metal heads.
