Check out Amon Amarth with Cannibal Corpse at the Wellmont Theater on Thursday, May 9th!

Swedish melodic death metal band Amon Amarth was formed in 1992. Formed from previous grindcore band Scum, Members include Olavi Mikkonen, Johan Hegg, Ted Lundström, Johan Söderberg, and Jocke Wallgren. A creative name to say the least, members got the name Amon Amarth from Mount Doom, a volcano in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth. Their name is creative by itself, but Amon Amarth’s songs are also melodic and contain mythological elements. The lyrics often deal with Viking mythology, which has led to the band being mis-labeled as Viking metal, not melodic death metal as they prefer.

Since their beginnings, Amon Amarth has been nonstop in the music industry releasing twelve studio albums. Their debut album was Once Sent from the Golden Hall, released in 1998 although their breakthrough didn’t come for another decade. When 2008 came around, Amon Amarth released Twilight of the Thunder God, which charted No. 10 on the Swedish album charts and No. 50 on the U.S. Billboard 200. Their most recent album, Great Heathen Army, was released in 2022.

Cannibal Corpse is an American death metal band formed in Buffalo, New York. Formed in 1988, Cannibal Corpse has been around for more than three decades. Although the band has had a frequent rotation of members, current member George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher joined the band in the late nineties as the lead vocalist alongside Alex Webster and Paul Mazurkiewicz, the only two consistent members of the band.

Cannibal Corpse has been heavily inspired by popular metal bands Metallica, Slayer, and Possessed. Despite the band having little radio airplay, they have managed to garner a cult following, likely to be attributed to their consistent album releases. Cannibal Corpse has released sixteen studio albums, with Chaos Horrific being their most recent release in late 2023.
