Disturbed is an American metal band and are one of the pioneers in a subgenre called “Nu-metal”, which emerged in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The style of metal featured drop tuned guitars and heavy influences from other genres like hip-hop, electronic, and reggae. Some notable bands included alongside Disturbed are Korn, Linkin Park, Mudvayne, Deftones, and Slipknot.

Disturbed made a huge impact on the metal scene when they released their debut full-length album “The Sickness” in 2000, which featured songs like “Voices”, “Stupify”, and “Violence Fetish”. It also included the band’s breakthrough single “Down With the Sickness” – a monumental song the band performs regularly to this day and includes one of the most intense spoken word breakdowns in music that caught many people’s attention.

Two years later, Disturbed released their sophomore album “Believe”, which featured a huge single as the opening track called “Prayer”. The cover art was also the band’s first album to showcase their logo, which is a combination of emblems from religions across the globe – a symbol that the band is for all people, and we are all humane and must support each other.

2005 saw the release of the band’s third album “Ten Thousand Fists” and introduced thei mascot dubbed “The Guy” – a muscular, hooded figure with glowing red eyes and a sinister smile. “The Guy” would go on to be the focus of every album’s cover art, minus “Evolution”, as well as the imagery for most of the merchandise. He is as iconic as the music itself.

Six more albums would be released with the latest being 2022’s “Divisive”. This album featured the singles “Hey You”, “Divisive”, and “Unstoppable”. During the “Best of 2022” show of WDHA’s Metal with the Mikes, Mike Bufis listed “Divisive” as one of his Top 5 Favorite Albums of the Year.

Disturbed is one of the few metal bands that has broken boundaries and is beloved by people of all different groups – whether they be different social classes, religions, or simply high school cliques. Two people with completely different interests otherwise can come together over a love of Disturbed. That’s a feat most bands cannot reach.
