Canadian metalcore band Spiritbox was formed in 2017 by the husband-and-wife duo of Courtney LaPlante and Mike Stringer, both formerly of iwrestledabearonce. Joining them is drummer Zev Rose and former As I Lay Dying bassist Josh Gilbert. They released two EPs in 2017’s Spiritbox and 2019’s Singles Collection, focusing solely on building an online presence before booking their first tour in 2020, which was cancelled due to Covid.
In 2020, Spiritbox released the single “Holy Rolly” which proceeded to blow up for them, debuting at 25 on the Billboard Hot Hard Rock Songs. Later that year, they released a new version featuring Ryo Kinoshita formerly of Crystal Lake that performed almost as well. They would release another three singles in “Constance”, “Circle With Me”, and “Secret Garden” before releasing their debut full length album Eternal Blue.
Eternal Blue earned a universal acclaim rating on Metacritic’s scale, receiving perfect ratings from the likes of Kerrang!, Metal Injection, and Outburn. The album was also a high contender on numerous best of 2021 lists, including topping lists by both Loudwire and Metal Hammer. It also did well commercially, topping both the Top Rock and Hard Rock Albums charts and peaked at 13 on the Billboard 200 chart.
The following year, Spiritbox released their third EP Rotoscope (2022), which was quickly followed by the announcement of their first US headlining tour. In 2023, they released their fourth and most recent EP The Fear of Fear, which must like their previous releases did extremely well with critics. The album reached the number 5 spot on both the US Top Hard Rock Albums chart and the UK Rock & Metal Albums chart. The EP also spawned not one, but two tracks nominated for Best Metal Performance in “Jaded” and “Cellar Door”. “Cellar Door” is running against other massive metal tracks like Metallica’s “Screaming Suicide” and Gojira’s “Mea Culpa (Ah! Ça ira!)”.
Now, the band is on the cusp of releasing their second full length album in Tsunami Sea in March of 2025.They released two tracks so far in “Soft Spine” and “Perfect Soul” and have announced a tour around the release of the album. Joining them on tour is UK metal band Loathe, New Jersey’s own hardcore group Gel, and Portland, Oregon’s Dying Wish.
