According to a new report by U.S. News & World published on Tuesday (Oct. 25), out of 2,000 universities from 90 countries, 280 were in the United States, and seven were in New Jersey. The rankings are made to help students accurately compare institutions around the world.
The listings measure a university’s global and regional research reputation and academic research performance. They are broken down into these categories:
- Global research reputation (12.5%)
- Regional research reputation (12.5%)
- Publications (10%)
- Books (2.5%)
- Conferences (2.5%)
- Normalized citation impact (10%)
- Total citations (7.5%)
- Number of publications that are among the 10% most cited (12.5%)
- Percentage of total publications that are among the 10% most cited (10%)
- International collaboration – relative to country (5%)
- International collaboration (5%)
U.S. News has been ranking the United States separately for nearly 40 years, and this ranking shows how United States universities stand on the global stage.
Last year, the United States had the most universities on the list, with 271. This year it came in second, with 280, after China, with 338.

Rowan University
Rowan University located in Glassboro, NJ was ranked #1668 out of the 2,000 schools on the list this year. In subject rankings, they tied for #998 in Clinical Medicine. Take a look at Rowan's breakdown here.
Stevens Institute of Technology
Stevens Institute of Technology located in Hoboken, New Jersey was ranked #1225 out of the 2,000 schools on the list this year. In subject rankings, Stevens came in #387 for Computer Science, #316 for Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and #477 for Engineering. Take a look at Stevens' breakdown here.
Montclair State University

New Jersey Institute of Technology
New Jersey Institute of Technology located in Newark, New Jersey was ranked #826 out of the 2,000 schools on the list this year. NJIT ranked #175 in Computer Science, #71 in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, and #406 in Engineering. Take a look at NJIT's full breakdown here.
Rutgers-Newark
Rutgers-Newark located in Newark, New Jersey was ranked #598 out of the 2,000 schools on the list this year. Rutgers-New Brunswick
Rutgers-New Brunswick located in Piscataway and New Brunswick, New Jersey was ranked #143 out of the 2,000 schools on the list this year. Rutgers-New Brunswick's highest subject rankings were in Agricultural Sciences (#45), Pharmaceutical and Toxicology (#54), and Arts and Humanities (#65). Princeton University
Last, but certainly not least is Princeton University. Princeton is located in Princeton, New Jersey and is the Garden State's highest-ranked university on the list at #16.
