After reading an old interview with Wolfgang Van Halen, I decided that I wanted to tell you about an overlooked gem of an album that he and I both really appreciate.

The band is the Australian rock outfit Karnivool. The album is their 2^nd full-length release, “Sound Awake.”

To me, it’s the album that they really started to head in more of a progressive direction.  But it’s still very accessible with some straightforward rockers and a couple of high-energy bangers too.

The album starts with a TOOL-like build. And once it’s in full swing, the vibe is just so unique and all over the map.  It keeps you very interested in what they’re going to do on the next track.

Check out a few highlights:

• Karnivool - Goliath

  A massive bass riff with deep tones. Odd time signatures and a massive chorus. It’s pretty epic!

• Karnivool - Set Fire To The Hive

  The drums on this track are all over the place. It feels almost manic, which goes along with the lyrics. A very rockin’ tune that can make a live crowd lose it!!!

• Karnivool - All I Know

  This one starts off with a smooth, mellow verse and picks up into a massive, catchy chorus.  Powerful vocals, emotional lyrics, and a tight rhythm section hold it all together.
