Jersey Magazine with Jim Monaghan

This week on Jersey Magazine, Jim Monaghan is joined by Grace Sica, the Executive Director of Operation Warm.

Families in poverty spend the majority of their income on food, housing, childcare, and healthcare, leaving little room for essentials like winter clothing. The average cost of a warm coat ($60) or shoes & socks ($48) is unattainable for many low-income families, especially those with multiple children.

Operation Warm, a national nonprofit dedicated to providing brand-new, coats and shoes to children in need, is teaming up with Subaru to collect coats and shoes to deliver essential winter clothing to underserved communities across the country to ensure children have the warmth and confidence they need to thrive at school and in their communities.

  • Greetings From the Garden State - Felipe Rose

This week on our Greetings From the Garden State segment, host Mike Ham spotlights Felipe Rose, one of the original members of the Village People.

Now making his home in Asbury Park, Rose was originally from Brooklyn. He took his Native American character from his father who was part Lakota and part Cherokee.

Rose’s story is fascinating and goes FAR beyond the idea of behind part of what was originally considered, by some, a novelty act.

  • NJ's Monarch Family Associates Receives $1.25 Million Grant From Bezos Day 1 Families Fund

Taiisa Kelly is the CEO of Cranford-based Monarch Family Associates. She joined Jim Monaghan on Jersey Magazine to talk about the $1.25 million grant that MFA just received from the Bezos Day 1 Families Fund.

Family homelessness in the U.S. rose dramatically from 2022 to 2023, and families now represent more than 28 percent of the countryโ€™s homeless population, according to a 2024 report from the National Alliance to End Homelessness. With its one-time Day 1 Families Fund grant, Monarch will work to reverse this national trend by serving families experiencing homelessness throughout the state of New Jersey.

Specifically, Monarch Housing Associates plans to use its funds to support implementation of a statewide Strategic Plan to End Family Homelessness. The Day 1 Families Fund investment will be used to expand on the success of Rapid Rehousing to ensure more families can access this critical support to regain housing stability. Funding will also be used to develop regional hubs which will support families in navigating the services and benefits available to help them maintain stability in housing.

Banana Is The Best! What A Dog!

    Check out Banana’s Video

Banana is such a special dog. It’s Terrie Carr and it’s so gratifying to meet lovely dogs in our local shelter system and be a small part of their journey to finding a new home. I LOVED spending time with Banana.

I don’t think I have ever met a more gentle soul and her foster family Linda and Peter are giving her a great place to hang her hat before Banana finds her new family.

    About Banana

Banana is considered a senior as she is older than 7, but you would never know it. She is a Miniature Pinscher mix and has the most gentle, lovely, calm disposition despite being created 24/7 in her previous home, is sociable, and eager to make new friends with a gentle tail wag and a sniff of your hand. She also loves getting pets and would love to be in a home with another dog OR cat to keep her company. She is simply lovely. Banana is a great small (ish) size and according to her foster family never barks. She has the sweetest, softest eyes and will melt your heart like she did mine.
