Patricia Crisafulli is a New York Times Bestselling Author and an award-winning fiction writer.
She has tried-and-true advice for starting the “new year off WRITE” — pursuing creative goals that enhance and enrich our lives.
In previous weeks here on Jersey Magazine, we’ve spoken with former MLB manager Clint Hurdle and Wall Street Journal bestselling author Laura Gassner Otting about their tips for managing New Year’s Resolutions and this morning we add Patricia to the fold.
With a decision to return to school for her Master’s degree at the age of 52, Patricia opened up doors to a whole new part of her life that has proved to be both personally and professional rewarding.
Patricia and Jim Monaghan talk about how to turn on your own creativity in the New Year.
Among Patricia Crisafulli’s tips
- MAP IT OUT – Experts frequently talk about the power of declaring our intentions – putting goals in writing, etc. Tricia adds a twist to that with a CREATIVE MAP! A visual that connects the dots to wherever you are right now , to wherever you want to be this year.
- ACKNOWLEDGE WHAT’S ALREADY ON YOUR MAP – No matter how new or different our goals and dreams may seem – or how much of a stretch they are from our daily lives — chances are we have already taken some steps toward them. We just need to look back with discernment to find those encouraging connections. For example – one aspiring writer in her 60s shared with Tricia how she remembered loving writing back in high school–and that connection put her dream to start writing a memoir “on the map.”
- FIND PEOPLE WHO CAN HELP YOU ON YOUR OWN PERSONAL JOURNEY – As you follow your Creative Map, be open to people, places, and experiences that enrich the journey – and foster greater discovery. The next sign you see on a bulletin board just may lead to the opportunity you’ve been waiting for. For Tricia, it was a random postcard that arrived in the mail that ultimately led to an MFA degree in creative writing, the Distinguished Thesis Award … and her first novel!
