During her 17 - year career at Bayonne high school, Stefanie has always put the well-being of her students first through countless support in and out of the classroom. She plays a pivotal role as the National Honor Society Advisor, working with each student every year to support their goal of becoming a member. She's also the advisor for the newly created Future Educators of America Club, which encourages young people to continue to give back to their community by becoming educators later in life. Stefanie works with each member of the club and takes them on trips to engage other like-minded students across New Jersey while also orchestrating a tutoring program that they take part in once a month with elementary students in Bayonne public schools. Stefanie continues to give back to her community as the Chairperson of the Bayonne Education Association's Families and Students Together Program and has organized a variety of events that provided families and students with over 10,000 books, 5,000 backpacks, thousands of school supplies, and so much more. additionally, she served as the Gay Straight Alliance Advisor from 2012 to 2016. Even though she is no longer the advisor, new and past students continue to connect with her and seek her support in life.

Lauren Finizia

As an art teacher, Lauren inspires her students to explore their creativity through a wide variety of art mediums. Her classroom is a welcoming space where students feel encouraged to express their talents and share their work. Beyond the classroom, Lauren goes above and beyond to foster artistic growth and community engagement. She leads the school mural club and serves as the advisor for the Arts Honor Society. She also organizes the annual Empty Bowls charity event, which combines art, philanthropy, and community spirit. Lauren guides her students in creating handmade pottery bowls that are sold at the event to raise awareness about world hunger. Proceeds from the event are donated to the New Milford Food Pantry. In addition to her teaching and charity work, Lauren plays a key role in supporting the school’s theater department, assisting with set design for productions in the fall, spring, and summer. Her talent, creativity, and dedication ensure that every performance is brought to life in spectacular fashion. Lauren exemplifies the very best qualities of a teacher: dedication, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to her students and community. Her efforts leave a lasting impact not only on her students but also on the broader New Milford community.

Devin Novakoski

Devin is this year's NJEA Community Spotlight Recipient.

This is Devin’s 6th year at the school, and he has made a big difference in the lives of his students, their families, staff, and the entire educational community. Although the content is difficult, Devin makes learning latin meaningful and fun, and he cares deeply for all his students. He routinely has students in his classroom during his lunch period to help with challenging concepts, make up a test or assignment, or counsel anyone dealing with a life issue. Devin proudly attends many after school activities to support his school and his students and is also the school's Educational Enrichment Advisor, National Junior Honor Society Advisor, 8th Grade Advisor, and Co-President of local NJEA chapter. Outside of school, Devin volunteers to help with a care package drive for the homeless and volunteers with the mothers against drunk driving organization. As a music fan, Devin wears a different concert shirt each dress down Fridays to benefit the home-school association, showcasing all the shows he has been to including Mastodon, Primus, Rush, and Dorothy.

Hafeezah Abdullah

Hafeezah brings a sense of warmth and compassion in her daily school lessons. In her classroom, she provides real-life lessons in animal husbandry by keeping live animals and encouraging students to interact with these organisms to learn to care for the environment around them. They not only learn about the upkeep of other creatures, but they develop a healthy concern for the fragile ecosystem that we all share. Her philosophy promotes a positive and meaningful interaction with students, since she believes that this practice will better not only her students but the world in general. She incorporates project-based, cooperative learning into her classes ensuring that students work together and provides examples from previous years so that students are aware of her high expectations. Outside the classroom, she encourages students to seek areas of individual research and pursue projects of personal interest. Hafeezah is also known for encouraging her female students to pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) and has been very successful in encouraging many students who have graduated to enter the field of science as their chosen profession. She tells her students to always follow their dreams.

Alejandra Ferrari

Alejandra has been a custodian at Ironia Elementary School for the past 9 years while being the head custodian for the past 5 years. She is always the first one to arrive every day to get the building ready for the staff and 500+ students. In the wintertime, she arrives soon after the first snowflake falls to make sure the students and staff can get in the parking lot and building safely. During the summer months when school isn’t in season, she is always busy painting and polishing the school. If a staff member needs something fixed or taken care of, Alejandra is the person to ask. Even when something seems unfixable, she works her magic, and the item is as good as new! She also helps translate from English to Spanish or vice a versa for students and parents alike. The students love her just as much as the staff does! She is such a valued member of the staff and deserves to be celebrated just as teachers are. Ironia certainly would not run as smoothly as it does if it weren't for Alejandra!

Peter Bellomo

Peter works diligently to immerse the students in all kinds of music. One of the many ways is through a Rock Band program that he created where students learn instruments like the bass guitar, electric guitar, drums, and more. He even makes learning music fun for Kindergarteners using games and has a wall of ukuleles for students with smaller fingers that want to learn guitar. As they grow older, students also learn how to read music notation as well. Students that are shy in the regular academic setting blossom under his teaching environment. Outside the classroom, Peter works on the school plays and large school events like the Black History Month celebration. Many students would not have the means to learn an instrument in a private setting, but Peter goes above and beyond to ensure the success of each student that wants to make music.

Jeanne has been the heart and soul of Oxford for 33 years. As a master educator who has taught multiple grade levels and subjects, her impact extends far beyond the classroom walls. She has directly shaped the lives of over 1,000 students, leaving an indelible mark on each student who has passed through her classroom. What truly sets Jeanne apart is her role as a mentor to fellow educators. She has guided countless teachers through their early years, helping them develop into confident and skilled professionals. Her commitment to fostering a warm, inclusive learning environment has made Oxford a place where students feel safe to take academic risks and grow as individuals. She continuously adapts her teaching methods to meet the evolving needs of her students while preserving the core values that make Oxford special. Eileen's students often read in class together, but the best part is when they engage in discussions and activities that take place within the lessons. She always finds a unique way to relate the story to real life for her students. Additionally, she teaches so much more than language arts within her classroom. Character and integrity are an important part of Eileen's responsibility, and she makes it a priority for her students every day. She is always standing at her door waiting to greet her students and makes sure that each student feels recognized and important. She also emphasizes the importance of socializing appropriately with others. Her professionalism, along with her outstanding rapport with students and staff, is the standard for everyone else who works at Hasbrouck Heights Middle School.

Angela is an exemplary educator whose teachings truly reach every student of every capability. She is an expert at tapping into her students’ creative and analytic minds to make learning fun. Year after year, students step away from Angela’s classes with an often-new-found passion for biology, and an enthusiasm to apply these skills. Her passion for teaching extends well beyond the classroom, as she participates in a variety of professional development workshops, enrichment programs, and conferences throughout the year. As a club advisor, Angela is tireless in her pursuit of unique and engaging fundraisers, events, and activities. She is responsible for successful fundraising events such as the annual Teacher Turkey Trot. Not a month goes by without an engaging, unique, and educational fundraiser by Angela. From school pep rallies to overnight STEM field trips and beyond, Angela is always at the front of the line ready to help.

Beyond the classroom, William eagerly participates in committees and professional development opportunities, including his recent training in a newly implemented mental health program. Additionally, as Athletic Director, William was able to redesign the school's weight room, transforming it into a health and wellness facility with safer, more inclusive exercise equipment for all students. Uyen is confident, passionate, devoted, and a motivated school leader who inspires others inside and outside of the classroom. She seeks and embraces professional learning opportunities to enhance her teaching in the classroom. Her Algebra I students outperformed the state and district on the New Jersey Department of Education’s New Jersey Student Learning Assessment with 100% passing rate. She is truly an exceptional teacher since she always seems to provide her students with the right dose of strictness and love. As an active member of the school's professional learning community, Uyen has served as a Mathematics Coordinator and Data Team Leader for seven years. It is well known in the building that she is always willing to devote her free time during the day to help a colleague in need. So much so that she is known as the Infinity Campus guru. Add to this the accuracy, professionalism, and effectiveness with which she performs her assigned tasks, and you have someone very special.
