Author Robert Dean Lurie's new book - Begin the Begin: R.E.M.'s Early Years - takes a behind-the-scenes look at one of America's most beloved bands of the 1980's and 90's.
It's the most detailed account of the band's early days, through their initial meetings with one another through their rise to stardom that took a path mostly designed by the band members themselves, as opposed to what Joni Mitchell once referred to as the "star-making machinery" of the music business.
