Ohio Business Lets You Keep the Tattooed Skin of a Loved One When They Die
Tattoos have long been one of the few exceptions of the “You can’t take it with you” idiom, but one Ohio-based business is changing that.
Save My Ink Forever allows the ability to preserve the tattooed skin of a late loved one. Per their website, “Save My Ink Forever focuses on creating an everlasting memorial. At Save My Ink Forever we create more than just a picture. You receive the actual tattoo. This becomes a framed piece of art that is presented to the family in a dignified manner.”
How did this idea come about? Per Australia’s News 9, Michael Sherwood, a mortician from Cleveland, and his son, Kyle, came up with Save My Ink Forever over some drinks with friends.
“One of my dad’s friends told him he would like his tattoo preserved,” said Kyle. “Being the guys our friends come to with death-related questions, we kind of laughed about it at first. [But] with the art in tattoos and how much they mean to people, why not keep them after they die? People put ashes in urns on mantles and visit stones with their loved one’s names on them. Why not keep their tattoos as a memorial?”
A tattoo must be “excised” by the funeral home within 72 hours of someone’s passing in order for Save My Ink Forever to properly preserve the art. The entire process, however, can take between three and four months.
