NBA Players Will Be Able To Wear ‘Smart Rings’ To Protect Against Coronavirus
The NBA is taking extra precautions to keep staff healthy as they look to restart their season. As the New York Post explains, all players and essential staff members will be given the option to wear a “smart ring” to help protect them from coronavirus.
They state, “The ring contains sensors that track vital statistics like heart rate, respiration rate and body temperature. The data collected from the ring is fed into an algorithm that the venture capital-backed company boasts can predict the onset of coronavirus symptoms up to three days in advance.”
The Oura ring retails between $300 and $400 and has an over 90-percent accuracy. They are also water-resistant and can last up to seven days on one charge.
The New York Post adds, “The ring’s data will be analyzed by the University of Michigan to create an illness risk index. Participants will have access to their own data, which will not become visible unless that player or staff member’s illness probability score breaches a certain level.”
Training camps will begin on July 9; Games will commence on July 30 at the Disney’s Wide World of Sports complex in Orlando.
