Hair Loss May Be Another Symptom Of Coronavirus
There seems to be a long list of strange symptoms associated with coronavirus outside of the typical fever, headaches, coughing, and trouble breathing. Those include rashes, loss of taste and smell, blood clotting, dizziness, diarrhea, delirium, chickenpox-like lesions. Now experts are adding hair loss to the list.
According to the New York Post, a recent study was conducted by a doctor at the Indiana University School of Medicine using a Facebook poll in a COVID-19 survivor’s group. Over 1,500 patients were surveyed, and almost 100 symptoms related to the virus were discovered. That’s a vast difference from the 17 that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has identified.
In a statement about the findings, an associate research professor said, “The new symptoms our study identified include severe nerve pain, difficulty concentrating, difficulty sleeping, blurry vision and even hair loss.”
According to the outlet, one woman said she got the virus in April and has since lost 75 percent of her hair. She wrote, “My face already looks more aged since contracting the virus but still I’m resilient. I’m not sure if my hair will ever return back the same.” She also added that she plans on buying a wig.
As Today points out, “Doctors say telogen effluvium is to blame, a temporary condition where people experience excessive hair shedding after an illness, surgery, high fever, a stressful life event, extreme weight loss, or giving birth.”
They add, “The timing of an uptick now is not surprising since people with telogen effluvium usually start to see the hair loss about three months after getting sick or the stressful life event, which coincides with about three months since the peak of the pandemic.”
