Agustin Ramirez Powers Patriots to Season Opening Series Victory
Agustin Ramirez might be the next Yankees prospect to star in Somerset. The Yankees Double-A affiliate, Somerset Patriots kicked off the 2024 season on the winning note, taking two of three from the Richmond Flying Squirrels thanks in major part to Ramirez’s heroics.
Agustin Ramirez Stats
Ramirez, ranked 22nd among the Top 30 prospects in the Yankees farm system, crushed three home runs in the weekend series, easily becoming Fox Sports New Jersey’s Week 1 Player of the Week. Over the three games, Ramirez batted .286 with three homers and six RBI.
The 22-year-old native of the Dominican Republic, who was born on September 10, 2001, became the first Patriots to homer in three straight games since T.J. Rumfield did so last July.
On Friday night, Ramirez homered in the bottom of the first inning, just moments after Ben Rice took the first pitch he saw and planted it over the center field wall.
Grant Richardson added to Somerset’s early 2-0 lead with an RBI single in that same first inning. All three early runs scored with nobody out.
Zach Messinger was effective in Opening Night start, tossing five and two-thirds innings of work, allowing four runs, while striking out five.
Come the bottom of the sixth inning, Patriots veteran Max Burt delivered the game-winner with a bloop single to left, scoring the eventual game-winner.
While Saturday was a 13-3 loss to Richmond, the lone highlight had to be Ramirez, who again homered for the second straight night.
Finally, on Sunday, Ramirez homered for the third consecutive game, this one a three-run bomb to left that gave Somerset a 4-0 lead. The Patriots would win by the count of 8-0.
While Ramirez was killing it at the dish, the Patriots were whipping the floor with the Squirrels from the pitcher’s mound. Trystan Vrieling was spectacular in his professional debut, blanking Richmond over five innings of two-hit ball. He also struck out six.
Tanner Myatt, Ryan Anderson, and Danny Watson combined to throw four one-hit innings of relief, with a combined four strikeouts.
The Patriots (2-1) hit the road to New Hampshire for a week-long series against the Fischer Cats. Catch all the games live and stream exclusively on FoxSportsRadioNewjersey.com.
