Man Gets 30-Minutes Of Sleep A Day Claiming It Improves Life Expectancy
A man in Japan says he gets 30-minutes of sleep a day and claims it’s all to improve his life expectancy. I’m not sure if he’s got this right.
I’ve always heard that eight hours of sleep per night is the sweet spot. However, this guy is claiming that 30 minutes is all you need and he’s saying it will double his life expectancy. Again, the average life expectancy for a male is around 75-years-old, so I’m not sure if his math is right on doubling his life expectancy. Regardless, the 40-year-old is looking and feeling good!
How Much Sleep Do You Need At Night?
If I happen to get any less than six hours of sleep at night I am a total waste of space the next day. I’m running on fumes and am far from my normal self. However, this guy is saying he gets 30 minutes of sleep a day and it works for him. Is he onto something or will it soon catch up to him in a major way?
30 minutes of sleep is not a lot of time! It’s far from what I’d describe as a quality night’s sleep. Honestly, it’s not even a power nap and probably skews closer to being a quick cat nap more than anything else. According to Interesting Engineering, 40-year-old Daisuke Hori sleeps for 30 minutes a day–and has been doing so for nearly 12 years! He believes this habit will “double” this life expectancy. As mentioned earlier, the math can’t be correct there, but to each their own. While it seems absurd, and even thinking about it makes me tired, it’s apparently working for him.
He’s in outstanding shape. He claims he avoids drowsiness by avoiding indulging in any sports activity or drinking coffee an hour before eating–and notes that it would work for any person! I can’t see it working for me. Now, he’s trying to spread his philosophy by founding the Japan Short Sleepers Training Association where he gives classes on sleep and health, per Interesting Engineering. It sounds like his belief is quality over quantity, and a quality short sleep is more beneficial than a long sleep. Surprisingly, some of his students are seeing some positive results. According to Interesting Engineering, one of his students used to sleep for 8 hours at night but now functions on only 90 minutes after training hard and has maintained this new lifestyle for four years.
Japanese Man Gets 30-Minutes Of Sleep A Day
However, doctors do caution against this theory. Dr. Guo Fei, a neurologist at Huazhong University of Science and Technology Xiehe Shenzhen Hospital advises adults get 7-9 hours of sleep daily, per Interesting Engineering. Personally, I like the sound of that much better. How do you think you’d fare going seven days with only 30 minutes of sleep per day? Now, how about 12 years?
