Formed in Los Angeles, California in 1985, Guns N’ Roses has become one of the biggest names in rock. The band’s “classic” lineup had vocalist Axl Rose, bassist Duff McKagan, guitarists Slash and Izzy Stradlin, and drummer Steven Adler, has since evolved into the current one, which has Richard Fortus stepping in for Stradlin, Frank Ferrer taking over for Adler, and Dizzy Reed and Melissa Reese joining on keyboards.
Guns N’ Roses’ debut album Appetite for Destruction (1987) took a year to go from a mediocre first album to the iconic powerhouse that it is today. Containing massive hits such as “Mr. Brownstone”, the top 10 singes “Welcome to the Jungle” and “Paradise City”, and their only #1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart “Sweet Child o’ Mine”, the album is an absolute classic.
Their follow-up, 1988’s G N’ R Lies was another hit for the band, this time starting strong and reaching the number 2 spot on the Billboard 200 chart. The release contained one of Guns N’ Roses’ biggest ballads “Patience”, a top 5 hit that has been certified gold and even saw a new life when a cover by Chris Cornell was posthumously released.
The next releases, the Use Your Illusion I & II double album from 1991, took the number two and one spots on the Billboard 200 charts upon their release. Much like the previous releases, the double album contains some of the band’s biggest and best work, including the cover of Wings’ “Live and Let Die”, the cover of Bob Dylan’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”, “November Rain”, and “Civil War”.
Guns N’ Roses would release two more albums in the punk cover album “The Spaghetti Incident?” in 1993 and Chinese Democracy in 2008, with neither living up to their previous releases. This led to a handful of quiet years for the band, before the Not in This Lifetime… Tour which saw the return of Slash and McKagan to the band in 2016. The tour continued until 2019, becoming one of the highest-grossing tours of all time.
