WDHA’s Metal with the Mikes is giving you the chance to win a pair of tickets to see Meshuggah with Cannibal Corpse at The Theater at Madison Square Garden on Thursday, April 24th, 2025!
Meshuggah in an extreme metal band formed in Umeå, Sweden in 1987. The band is known for their complex song styles, utilizing polymeter and polyrhythms, along with their signature chugging riffs. The band released their debut album Contradictions Collapse in 1991 which was met with positive reviews but remained a more “underground” release as it didn’t have much success commercially. They followed the album up with the EPs None in 1994 and Selfcaged in 1995 which introduced the more complex stylings and was favorably reviewed.
After a brief European tour in early 1995, Meshuggah went to work on their second full length album Destroy Erase Improve which was released in the Spring of that year. The album was extremely well received and even peaked at 43 on the Swedish Albums chart. They followed the successful release with some touring as well as working on their third album Chaosphere which was released at the end of 1998. The release followed the band’s trend of positive reviews and landed them a spot opening for Slayer in 1999.
Meshuggah toured throughout the early 2000’s, leading to the release of Nothing in 2002. Nothing was the start of Mesuggah’s change from underground to mainstream metal, with the album reaching 165 on the Billboard 200 chart and getting a review in Rolling Stone magazine, both firsts for their label Nuclear Blast. Their next album, Catch Thirtythree, was released in 2005 and, despite being a 13-track album, is technically one single song with 13 different movements. Despite this unique yet classical approach to the album, it performed very well, landing at number 12 on the Swedish charts and peaked at 170 on the Billboard 200 chart, and even earning them a nomination at Sweden’s Grammi Awards.
The true launching point for Meshuggah was with the release of 2008’s obZen, which contains the group’s most well-known song to date in “Bleed”. The album peaked at 59 on the Billboard 200 chart and earned the band another Grammi nod along with massive media attention and critical acclaim. Their next album, Koloss (2012), followed their exponential successes, reaching 17 on the Billboard 200 chart and charting considerably well all over the world.
In 2016, Meshuggah released their eighth studio album The Violent Sleep of Reason, a massive commercial success for the band. It was Rolling Stone’s 2nd best metal album of 2016, and ranked similarly on Loudwire and Metal Injection’s year-end lists. The first track “Clockworks” even earned the band a Grammy nomination for Best Metal Performance. Most recently, they released Immutable in 2022, which was the band’s first chart-topping album, topping the US’s Top Hard Rock albums and the UK’s Rock & Metal Albums charts.
Cannibal Corpse is an American death metal band formed in Buffalo, New York. Formed in 1988, Cannibal Corpse has been around for more than three decades. Although the band has had a frequent rotation of members, current member George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher joined the band in the late nineties as the lead vocalist alongside Alex Webster and Paul Mazurkiewicz, the only two consistent members of the band.
Known for their grotesque album art along with song and album titles to match, Cannibal Corpse has handled a number of public controversies. However, as the saying goes, there’s no such thing as bad press, something Corpsegrinder and the band has said in the face of these issues. In 1995, when dealing with criticism from then-US Senator Bob Dole, Corpsegrinder stated “…it was like ‘cool, you’re not hurting us and you’re telling millions of people who we are’ – good job.” Despite the gruesome depictions the band is known for, the members of the group are the opposite, with Corpsegrinder known to constantly donate stuffed animals to children in need.
Cannibal Corpse has been heavily inspired by popular metal bands Metallica, Slayer, and Possessed. Despite the band having little to no radio airplay, they have managed to garner a cult following, likely to be attributed to their consistent album releases. Cannibal Corpse has released sixteen studio albums, with Chaos Horrific being their most recent release in late 2023.
