Formed in Dublin, Ireland in 1976, U2 is hands down one of the biggest rock acts in the world. The four piece, comprised of vocalist Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton, and drummer Larry Mullen Jr., are one of the world’s best-selling groups with at least 150 million records sold. They have the most Grammy awards of any group with 22 and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the first year they were eligible in 2005.
U2’s debut album was 1980’s Boy, but they didn’t reach true commercial success until the release of 1983’s War, the group’s first number one album in the UK. The album contained one of the band’s biggest hits to date with “Sunday Bloody Sunday”, as well as the ever popular “New Years Day”. The next album, The Unforgettable Fire (1984) contained another big hit for the band in “Pride (In the Name of Love)”.
When U2 released their fifth album, The Joshua Tree in 1987, they were catapulted to international stardom. Regarded as one of the best-selling albums in music history, the album contains three of the band’s most popular songs, and arguably three of the biggest rock songs of the late 80’s, in “Where the Streets Have No Name”, and the band’s only number one singles in the US “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For” and “With of Without You”.
In the 1990’s, the band began to shift their sound to introduce alternative, electronic, and industrial influences starting with 1991’s Achtung Baby, a critical success for the band and had the hits “Mysterious Ways” and “One”. The new direction could continue until they shifted back towards their more traditional rock styles in the 2000’s. They have since released six albums since 2000, with the most recent being Songs of Surrender, a reworking of 40 tracks that spanned their career.
