Check out Jack White at the Brooklyn Paramount on Wednesday, February 12th, 2025!
Born in 1975 in Detroit, Michigan as John Anthony White, Jack Gillis had his first brush with fame with his band The White Stripes. The White Stripes was formed in 1997 by Meg and Jack White. The duo released two albums that grew their popularity in the local Detroit scene before finding true commercial success with White Blood Cells in 2001. The popularity of The White Stripes only grew, with the release of their fourth album Elephant in 2003. This album earned the band two Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rock Song for their smash hit “Seven Nation Army”. They would release two more albums in 2005’s Get Behind Me Satan and 2007’s Icky Thump before officially breaking up in 2011. Towards the latter half of his time with The White Stripes, Jack White began to collaborate with other musicians, including Loretta Lynn on 2004’s Van Lear Rose and Electric Six. In 2005, while collaborating with Brendan Benson on the song “Steady as She Goes”, the duo decided to form The Raconteurs. Their first album under The Raconteurs name was Broken Boy Soldiers (2006), which was extremely well received as it landed on various top ten charts and earned two Grammy nominations. The Raconteurs had similar success with their second album Consolers of the Lonely (2008) which was nominated for a Grammy and peaked at number 7 on the Billboard 200 chart. While touring in support of the album, Jack White developed bronchitis, leading to Alison Mosshart of their touring partners the Kills to step in. This led to the two forming another group called the Dead Weather, which released their first album Horehound in 2009. At the start of 2012, while still working with both The Raconteurs and the Dead Weather, Jack White began to release music for his debut solo album titled Blunderbuss (2012). The album earned him numerous Grammy nominations including the coveted Album of the Year. His second solo album, Lazaretto released in 2014, topped the Billboard 200 chart, earned three more Grammy nominations, and broke the record for vinyl record sales in a week. Between 2014 and 2015, Jack put both of his bands on hiatus, allowing him to focus on his solo work, with The Raconteurs returning in 2018. In total, Jack White has six albums with The White Stripes, three albums with The Raconteurs, three with the Dead Weather, and six solo albums with the most recent being No Name released towards the end of 2024. With all of his work, he has earned 13 Grammy awards with a possible 14th coming out of No Name’s nomination for Best Rock Album at the 2025 ceremony.
