Iggy Pop/Josh Homme Documentary Due Out July 11
American Valhalla, the documentary about Iggy Pop and Josh Homme‘s collaboration on last year’s Post Pop Depression album and subsequent world tour, will be rolling into theaters starting July 11.
Co-directed by Homme and Andreas Neumann, who also did the photography for the album and other tour graphics, the film includes footage from the studio and stage, as well as rehearsals, featuring interviews conducted by Anthony Bourdain with those who took part — including Homme’s Queens of the Stone Age bandmate Dean Fertita and Arctic Monkeys drummer Matt Helders and others.
The tour was documented with last fall’s Post Pop Depression: Live From Royal Albert Hall, and Pop tells us the experience was one of the best of his long career:
“The culture behind it couldn’t be more different. I’m East Coast, they’re West Coast. I weigh probably about half of my co-writer…and yet we have, mentally we’re really on the same, about the same pitch level and wavelength. He likes going arty but he’s a rock boy; You scratch the surface and that’s a tough little rock boy — tough big rock boy. And the challenge was very simply to recognize the drummer is a more highly skilled musician than me or that I’ve ever been…The multi-instrumentalist (Fertita) is a better instrumentalist than me, and I gotta keep up…So I just tried hard to recognize that and up my game a little bit — sing a little better, be really quick with the lyrics so things wouldn’t develop on the daily basis too far without me. And it kinda worked out.”
