Tom Morello Talks New Prophets Of Rage Album, Remembering Chris Cornell
It’s a little over a month away from the release of Prophets Of Rage’s self-titled LP, and it sounds like we’re in for quite the experience.
In addition to the three track previews so far (“Unf*ck The World,” “Living On The 110” and “Radical Eyes”), guitarist Tom Morello echoes the excitement many fans have right now, and in a recent conversation with WRIF’s Meltdown, the band’s instant chemistry led to speedy songwriting:
“Any band you’re in, in order for it to be good, in order for it to stand on its own two feet, in order for it to be great, has to find its own chemistry. When we toured the U.S. last year, we had such a great time as friends and as musicians and as collaborators, we came off that tour and said, ‘Well, can we write a song [together]?’…And then we went into the rehearsal studio and wrote about ten songs in two weeks, and it was the most fun and fertile creative period I’ve had since the first Rage [Against The Machine] record.”
Naturally, the rock world is still mourning the loss of Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington, with Cornell’s death hitting very close to home for Morello because of their time together in Audioslave, Like many fans, Morello is still stunned by the ordeal but is thankful for the time he had with Cornell:
“I don’t think I’ll ever recover from his passing, but we have so many great memories, and I was just really glad that I was able to…We played an Audioslave show, the first one in 12 years in January [2017.] So to be able to reconnect with him, both as friends and as musical collaborators, that’s something I’m so glad we were able to do…We texted a couple of times after that, and he was great! On a scale of 100, he was 100…He was happy. He had a beautiful family. We talked about doing more Audioslave stuff, maybe even this year. So, it’s a real pity.”
