Dave Grohl on Foo Fighters’ Music: ‘We’re totally dad rock’
Perhaps the definition of “dad rock” is evolving with time similar to how “classic rock” has evolved over the years, but do the Foo Fighters fall under the “dad rock” label? According to Dave Grohl, the answer is yes.
Grohl appeared on Whitney Cummings‘ podcast “Good For You,” and Cummings touched on how even though the Foos are an incredibly popular band, they’re still a cool band. Grohl responded, “We’re not cool…I’ve done interviews with people before where they basically say, ‘What does it feel like to play music that’s obsolete?’ I had a guy in London that worked for a giant newspaper [ask me that.] I was kind of pissed…We had just sold out two nights at Wembley [Stadium], too…You know the whole dad rock thing? We’re totally dad rock…First of all, we are all dads, and you’re right, we’re a rock band… Look, I’m 50 years old, I have f-cking grey hair… But you know the funny thing is, I have never considered our band cool, and I like that.”
Grohl continued, “We’ve just never been hip or cool. We just really haven’t. I think that the reason why we’re still here is because we do kind of disconnect ourselves from the popular stuff that’s going on, but also because, what the f-ck do we care? I just want to f-cking play music.”
Well, if Foo Fighters are “dad rock” now, then a lot of us are the coolest bunch of fogies to walk the planet!
