Linkin Park has started a timer over the weekend on their website and social media accounts. What announcement is the Linkin Park timer counting down to? A tour? A new lead singer? What could it be???!!!!! I have some theories and some things I really would prefer for it not to be.
What's With The Linkin Park Timer?
So, what’s this countdown all about? Well, the Welcome To Rockville Festival page started at the same time. That of course fueled speculation that LP would be a part of that lineup with a new lead singer. However, even if I’m in the minority, I’m very much against that becoming reality.
Look, it’s happened before. Whether it’s replacing a drummer or guitar player….or yes, even a vocalist. But I just feel like in the case of Linkin Park, Chester Bennington had such a unique vibe in their songs and was such a gifted vocalist, that I don’t know who could fill his shoes. I mean, can you picture anyone else singing “Crawling In My Skin” with that rasp, nearing a scream, or “Breaking The Habit” from the Meteora album?
Now, maybe you’re laughing at me saying that there are many gifted singers out there who can replace him, but I feel like he was Linkin Park. Unlike other bands where sometimes it’s the band as a whole, or the guitar sound or what have you, to me LP was all about Chester. So I don’t see how they could pull it off. I know I’m not always right, so could there be someone out there who could sing Linkin Park songs at a high level and write new music with them? Of course. I just really miss Chester.
What I am hoping is that this countdown will be for a headlining gig at Rockville or several festivals….heck even a tour. But what I would love is or it to me a rotating lineup of guest vocalists. I have to admit that when Layne Staley died I said that was the end of Alice In Chains, but when I heard William Duvall harmonize with Jerry Cantrell I thought….hmmm, maybe they’re on to something.
So now we wait. When the countdown is up, we’ll see what they have to announce. I’m sure despite my feelings of being against a new lead singer, if they announced one……I’d surely hop online to purchase tickets to the tour. Hell, it’s Linkin Park!
DHA Listeners Pick The Best Bands To Carry On With a New Vocalist
It’s never easy to replace someone in your band. Especially when your band has worldwide fame and attention. The vocalist of the band makes things even harder since that voice has become synonymous with the music you’ve put out which resonated with fans.
However, it has been done successfully before and to this day actually. Again, it’s just not that easy. Here’s a look at what bands come to mind for DHA listeners when they think of bands that got a new lead singer and still were successful.
In no particular order of course:
AC/DC
Bon Scott was such a presence and had a such swagger to his voice and on-stage energy. After he died, it was hard to think of a new person fronting the band. But, in walks Brian Johnson. He doesn’t do an impression of Bon but still has that growly, interesting, sound that made the band what they are. The rest is history!
Skid Row
When most people think of these boys originally from Jersey, they think of Sebastian Bach’s glorious vocals. And to be honest, his vocals on those records were excellent. However, Skid Row is still putting out new music and they’ve found an uber-talented singer in Erik Grönwall! His voice is so powerful and all his own. He brings that modern spin to Skid Row while maintaining those old-school vocal stylings where the high notes are bountiful! He rocks!
Black Sabbath
To many, you can’t have Sabbath without Ozzy. It’s just not possible. Then again, the people that think that may have never heard Ronnie James Dio sing before. LOL
He brought a new almost more upbeat hard rocking sound to Sabbath and his vocal ability was just as good as the OZ Man’s. Not easy to find such a good fit!
Van Halen
Diamond Dave was a true force of nature. Not because he had the best voice in the history of Rock, but because he mixed his vocal ability with a massive on-stage persona that was dripping with charisma. After he was gone, the Van Halen fanbase had to approve of whoever replaced him. Thankfully, the boys hooked up with Sammy Hagar. Big Voice…..Check. Awesome performer…..check. More VH songs about love and ladies…… Definitely check.
