The ongoing state of System of a Down is always an interesting topic of conversation. The band’s last official tour was in 2018, with the final show of that tour taking place on October 19, 2018 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. According to Setlist.fm, they have performed only 15 times since then. In 2024, they only performed two shows: A headlining set at Sick New World in Las Vegas on April 27 and a special one-day festival at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. The latter show also featured Deftones and The Mars Volta.
Serj Tankian Being “Emotionally Checked Out”
Again, System of a Down has lent itself to some interesting headlines in recent years. About a month ago, singer Serj Tankian gave an interview to Metal Hammer where he was very frank about the band’s final albums.
Tankian said, “I had a very unique relationship with the last few [System] records because I had, to a certain degree, emotionally checked out of the band while making them. Because of the push and pull, I became very passive. There was music I wanted to bring in that I felt like I couldn’t… I was in a weird place. I contributed creatively, but I didn’t… I don’t know. I needed oxygen – I felt like there was too much going on.”
The band’s last two albums were 2005’s Mezmerize and Hypnotize, which were released in May and November, respectively. Their last piece of new music released was the double A-side single of “Protect the Land” and “Genocidal Humanoidz” in November 2020.
