Phil Anselmo New Zealand Shows Canceled Due to Past “White Power” Comments
Phil Anselmo had two upcoming shows in New Zealand next week, but in light of the singer’s “white power” comments from 2016 and the recent terrorist mass shootings in Christchurch, those shows have been canceled.
Per New Zealand outlet Stuff, Phil Anselmo & The Illegals were scheduled to play the Club Tavern in Christchurch on March 26 and Galatos in Auckland on March 27. Club Tavern shared in a since-deleted Facebook post, “The Philip Anselmo gig has been cancel [sic]. We do not and will not support white supremacy or racism!” Galatos shared via Faceboo, “Just today, information has come to hand which has made us uncomfortable about proceeding with this show.”

Anselmo’s “white power” comments took place during the 2016 edition of Dimebash, a tribute concert in honor of late Pantera guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. Anselmo was recorded giving a Nazi-like salute and then screaming, “white power!” Anselmo then issued a video apology shortly after the incident saying he deserved the backlash he was experiencing and “I am a thousand percent apologetic to anyone that took offense to what I said, because you should have taken offense to what I said.”
Two mosques in Christchurch were the sites of terrorist mass shootings on March 15 during the time of Friday Prayer, an Islamic ritual that takes place every Friday. Fifty people were killed by a 28-year-old Australian man who shared a white-nationalist manifesto via Twitter shortly before the shooting in which he referred to himself as a “fascist.”
