Mike Shinoda on Why Computers Should Be Considered Musical Instruments
Mike Shinoda will likely get a lot of attention and feedback regarding his thoughts on thinking of computers as musical instruments.
Shinoda took part in a fan Q&A recently and was asked whether he considered the computer to be an instrument. He responded, “Yes. Is the keyboard an instrument, first of all? Most people would say yes. The keyboard is just a MIDI interface, series of MIDI input receptors feeding information to an internal computer.”
He continued, “So there’s really no difference, theoretically, between pressing notes on a keyboard or hitting a drum pad, and that going to a thing that makes noises, versus your computer.”

Shinoda concluded, “Besides, ever since the beginning of our band, I really treated Pro Tools or Ableton as an instrument where you can chop up the audio and actually make new sounds out of the audio.”
Shinoda has been keeping busy as of late. Earlier this month, he released the single “Happy Endings” featuring iann dior and UPSAHL. He’s also very active on Twitch where he can be seen working on various pieces of music for a number of different artists and fans.
