Dio’s ‘Holy Diver’ Performed on ‘American Idol’, Judges Appear Confused
Dio got some love during the auditions of the 21st season of American Idol.
The band’s classic song “Holy Diver” was sung by Rach Karma in her audition. The 28-year-old singer from Connecticut delivered an enthusiastic performance. (However, it should be noted that her accompanying guitarist was rather awful, but that’s just this author’s opinion.)
While Karma’s vocals were solid, her singing style is just not what is typical of what American Idol looks for. In fact, her performance was met with painful looks from judge/pop star Katy Perry and judge/country star Luke Bryan. Meanwhile, third judge/legend Lionel Richie didn’t seem too phased by the heavy performance.

After Karma’s performance, Bryan extended his hands to his judges and said, “Shall we pray?” You know…because metal is the Devil or he not-so-funnily tried to make some “holy” reference. Perry then said, “It’s a ‘no’ for me for ‘American Idol,’ but rock on in your own world.”
Richie also voted no, but he did seem to appreciate Karma’s song choice saying, “I haven’t heard that song in a hundred years.” He went on to say he’s a big rock fan and counts Rob Zombie as one of his “dearest friends,” which seemed to shock Perry. Clearly, she forgot about Richie’s collaboration with Zombie on a rendition of “Brick House” in 2003.
Coincidently, Dio’s album Holy Diver, which also features the iconic track “Rainbow in the Dark,” turns 40 in May. Keeping scrolling to see which other albums celebrate their 40th anniversary this year.
