Rock Friends, It’s Terrie Carr and this week’s “Underrated” post talks about singers from the great Garden State who may not have sold the most records, but have a KILLER vocal quality and deserve waaaayyyyy more success and respect!

DHA MIC

  • Joe Lynn Turner

Hailing from Hackensack, Joe Lynn Turner has a MONSTER voice and impressive resume.
Fronting iconic bands like Rainbow, Deep Purple and Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force, Joe has also had a long solo career (Including his 1985 gem Rescue You which is one of my favorites) and has just released his new record “Belly Of The Beast.”

    Rainbow- Stone Cold

    Yngwie Malmsteen’s Rising Force

  • Pat Dinizio

The pride of Plainfield, The Smithereens are one of rock music’s most underrated treasures and Pat’s vocals are unique, distinct and so warm and beautiful.  instantly recognizable.
Download or pick up the bands entire catalog. You won’t be sorry.

    The Smithereens- Blood and Roses

The Smithereens- Drown In My Own Tears

  • Ray Gillen

Raised in Cliffside Park New Jersey, Ray was one of rock’s most powerful hard rock voices.
After stints in Rondinelli, Savatage and a short time with Sabbath, Ray formed Badlands with Ozzy guitarist Jake E. Lee and the bands debut was released in 1989. An amazing New Jersey voice indeed.

    Badlands- Winters Call

    Badlands- Dreams In The Dark

  • Fiona- Phillipsburg

While her name may not be immediately recognizable, her voice was great!  Stunningly beautiful too, I remember first hearing Fiona when I was a kid on WDHA and loving her song “Talk To Me” so much.  Born Fiona Flanagan, she moved to NJ from Ireland and is probably best known for her duet with Kip Winger “You’re Sexing Me” and her so-starring role with Bib Dylan in the film “Hearts On Fire”,

I was blown away to receive an email from Fiona a few months- back telling me she liked the “Queens Of Noise Show” and she sent me a photo of herself. It was really her! Wow!

    Fiona- Talk To Me

Fiona/Kip Winger- Everything You Do (You’re Sexin Me )

  • Dave Wyndorf- Red Bank

One of stoner rock’s pioneers Dave Wyndorf has incredible, powerful vocal acrobatics in the Monster Magnet catalog.

Their record “Powertrip” is a hard rock masterpiece.  I remember when they played WDHA’s Rock The Park and blew the lawn off Yogi Berra Stadium!

    Monster Magnet- Space Lord

    Monster Magnet- Powertrip

  • Glen Danzig - Lodi

Founder of the Misfits, and Danzig, Punk/Metal throat Glen Danzig has one of rock’s most recognizable roars.
His baritone vocal range is distinct and angry. Perfection baby. Glen invented dark, punk vocals growing up in Bergen County.

    Danzig- Mother

    Danzig- Dirty Black Summer
