Love My Thin Lizzy shirts! I have many

Saint Partick’s Day is Friday and being (almost) half Irish it was always a celebration in our house growing up.
And I have always had a great interest and love of Irish or Irish inspired bands.
This week on the WDHA Coffee Break, I highlight some of the artists that inspire me on 3/17 and decided to put together a list of TC faves…..

  • U2- A Sort Of Homecoming

From my favorite U2 record 1984’s “The Unforgettable Fire” this song is so beautiful and actually sounds like it “travels” to me. It’s all about Home.

  • Dropkick Murphy's - I'm Shipping Up To Boston

No list is complete without Celtic Punksters Dropkick Murphy’s.

Vocalist Ken Casey has been with the band since the beginning and they bring the party wherever they go.

  • The Cranberries - Ode To My Family

The vocals from the late Dolores O’Riordan are stunning on this track and the video is so emotional.
The band is from Limerick Ireland and I hear so much culture in their music.

  • Thin Lizzy- Whiskey In The Jar

Hands down my favorite band on the list, this beautiful Irish classic was actually a song my Irish Nana sang too so when Metallica covered it, I was freaked out! The Thin Lizzy version is my favorite and Phil is one of my favorite rock stars of all time.

  • The Boomtown Rats- Up All Night

Bob Geldof and his band were formed in Dublin in the 1970’s and were bigger overseas but put out some great tunes. Bob of course is best known for putting together Band Aid and Live Aid  and raising millions for famine relief.

  • Flogging Molly- Drunken Lullabies

More Celtic Punk action from the incredible Flogging Molly. I love this bands diversity….Loud and WILD…or soft and somber. They are awesome,

  • The Waterboys- Whole Of the Moon

The Waterboys were an 80’s band that stayed together even after my favorite member Karl Wallinger left just a few years into his fronting the band. The have members from Scotland, the UK and Ireland and there is something about their sound that always fits 3/17 to me. Whole Of The Moon is a GREAT tune.

  • The Pogues- Fairytale Of New York

Formed in London, their traditional Celtic Gaelic sound was an originator for bands who came after them.

Their vocalist Shane MacGowan is such an original.

  • Gary Moore- Over The Hills and Far Away

Gary Moore is an underrated guitar genius who has played with many artists and is best know for his blues masterpiece “Still Got The Blues” – but I decided to post this incredible track because I just love it!

If you are not familiar with this inspiring artist’s playing, please go back a check out his catalog. He was a master!

    Taken too soon in 2011.

  • Sinead O'Conner - Nothing Compares To You

Sinead is incredible and while there were so many I loved from her Lion and The Cobra release, I had to post he absolutely incredible version of the Prince masterpiece “Nothing Compares To You” because she took a song written by an iconic genius and made it her own. Sinead has often been criticized, misunderstood and chastised. The mark of a an artist for sure.

  • Van Morrison - Wavelength

Out of Northern Ireland Van Morrison is a legend. Instead of including an obvious song like Brown Eyed Girl or Moondance I chose a fave from the late 70’s  that is so underrated- Wavelength. So many dimensions to this talented performer.
